Past Mission Projects

1. English Language Skills Training

It is important to teach English communication skills to the children to make them employable. With this in mind, we have installed a TV, and DVD system at the orphanage, where the children learn spoken English through DVDs. The senior students (especially the ones studying English Literature in college) also assist the young ones with this important task.

2. Operation Water - Deep Bore well Project:

The summer of 2002 was tough for the children at the St. Anthony’s Children's Home. Water was in scarce supply, and some of the older children had to travel outside the Children's Home to fetch water to take a bath. Sr. Mary and Sr. Annamal had a request - a deep bore well would provide enough water for all the children’s needs. The cost of the project was $ 1800, and with funds from the mission, work on digging a bore well began early 2003. Water was struck at a depth of 150 feet, and a jet pump and collection tank were installed. Today there is plentiful water for all the children's needs in the Children's Home.

3. New Kitchen & Dining Hall Construction:

One of the biggest needs of the Children's Home were the construction of a good kitchen and dining hall. For many years, food was cooked in an open kitchen, and served to the children in a veranda (corridor). The children would take turns to eat in the small room, with the youngest children eating first. Sr. Annamal from the Children's Home writes “This caused unhealthy condition among the children and they could never eat together as a family. Knowing this, our friends of the Diocese of Eric came forward to construct the kitchen and dinning hall and our dream was finally fulfilled”.

A firewood burning kitchen, a gas burning kitchen, and a dining hall have been constructed in the Children's Home. The total area of the building is 1000 sq. ft. (Cost = $ 6450). Sr. Annamal adds “The new kitchen and dinning hall have created a healthy atmosphere for our Children’s Home. All the children can have their meals at the same time. With in a short time the cooks finish their work safely and easily. We the sisters and children are ever thankful for this generous help rendered to our needy children. Everyday the children pray with gratitude for the generous families. Mr. Antoine (Sri Kandiah) who initiated the project, passed away before the completion of the building. To express our gratitude for the wonderful work he has initiated, we have dedicated the building in his name. May his soul rest in Peace”.

4. College Tuition Support

Following completion of the course each girl will be financially secure and confident about the future.

There is great need to educate and train the children to become self-sufficient adults. With only meager funds, a majority of children (girls) were not able to attend college. Without a college education, the girls found it very difficult to find employment. It was a priority to provide some professional education for the girls to enable them to become self sufficient.

Sr. Annamal writes “ We are happy that you (the mission) were very much appreciative of this idea and you came forward to help our children to have professional training. We are deeply grateful for your generous support”.
